Students Taking Charge
Posted on Aug 17, 2009Sarah Macone, '10 of Milford organized a group of students to create the Students Taking Charge video on behalf of Lauralton’s new Smackdown-Turnaround Program started "for students/by students" in May. Since Sarah has lost almost 90 pounds and is living a much healthier lifestyle, she wanted to bring women’s issues, nutrition and fitness to her fellow students by starting this new program.
Lauralton came in second place in the video contest and will receive money prizes for the program and for the school. “Sarah is ‘a mover and a shaker’ for sure. She is our SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) President and she contacted all the girls to help with the video and to vote for Lauralton. I am really proud of all she has done and continues to do,” said Peg McGowan, Physical Education/Health Department Chair. The Students Taking Charge video contest involved students in 12 states, from West Virginia to California to North Carolina to Michigan, who created 18 videos to show the students, teachers, groups, activities or classes that make each school a healthy place to learn. According to Peg McGowan, “377 people joined this cause and 577 voted. The winner, with a grand total of 178 votes, was “How BHS Stays Healthy” from Berlin High School in Berlin, CT, which will receive a $500 grand prize and a $1000 donation to the winner’s school to support physical activity and nutrition programs.
