"Discover Lauralton" event successful!

The first-ever “Discover Lauralton - See What’s Here for You” event for 6th and 7th grade girls and their parents was a huge success! On Sunday, April 25, Lauralton administrators, faculty, students and alumnae greeted more than 175 potential students and their parents. Visiting students took full advantage of the opportunity to visit several fun activity sessions:
Magical, but real science
In the physical world some things that happen often appear to be magical. Science provides the explanations. Visiting students discovered some of the scientific puzzles that keep scientists busy. Physics experiments are amazing to see, but the fun is in understanding and Discover Lauralton attendees saw sometimes hard-to-believe science in action. This "minds-on" show challenged the participants and gave them ideas for experiments of their own.
Are you ready to fight for a cause?
Visiting students learned how a bill becomes law in Connecticut by taking part in a mini-debate with members of Youth & Government, a very popular student club.
NEVERMORE will English class bore you
Visitors joined our own Edgar Allan Poe for a kooky - and spooky- read-along of his infamous poem, The Raven! They learned about end rhyme, alternating end rhyme, and internal poetic rhyme schemes in a fun and interactive English department feature presentation that was not for the weak and weary of heart.
You thought math was only about numbers
Participating students saw that logic can lead to an answer without using numbers and they also heard some logic stories from Lauralton’s geometry students.
Responding to the needs of others
Visitors were given the opportunity to see the principles of Catholic social teaching come alive and learn how we are all called to serve those in need - here and around the world.
World Languages are so “Bazaar”
Lauralton students of French, Latin and Spanish provided crafts and games to entertain and challenge the middle school visitors. Among other such facts, visitors learned who Salvador Dalí and Claude Monet are and what Roman numeral XI represents. Some visitors even won a prize!
Sing with Advanced Vocal Ensemble
Visiting students had the opportunity to join in song with the Advanced Vocal Ensemble and learn one of their favorite songs.
Artistic expression
Visitors created their own decorative bead bracelets and found that this activity provided a great way to express themselves while designing lovely pieces to take home to remind them of their day at Lauralton.
Sports are fun
A visit to our gymnasium gave participants the opportunity to take part in some of the athletic activities enjoyed by Lauralton students.
Activities were also available for the parents of prospective students. While their daughters explored the school and participated in student activities, parents had the opportunity to learn more about the admissions process and financial aid; meet administrators, faculty, staff members and guidance personnel; speak with current parents; and learn about mission and service - the benefits of attending a Catholic school.
Due to its tremendous success, Discover Lauralton - See What's Here for You" for 6th and 7th grade students and their parents will be presented again next year on Sunday, April 10, 2011.
