SADD sponsors seatbelt usage demo/mock crash

Posted on Apr 28, 2010

Sponsored by Lauralton’s SADD chapter, Connecticut State Police presented a demonstration for Lauralton students on April 20, using "rollover simulator" and "seatbelt convincer" machines to simulate auto crashes/accidents and teach the value of seat belt usage. The next day, SADD sponsored a mock crash. “The SADD students are passionate about their efforts in promoting activities to keep our students safe at all times, and especially on their very special prom night,” states SADD moderator and Physical Education/Health Department Chair Peggy McGowan. According to the Milford Police Department, “the presentation serves as an educational tool to promote safe driving habits during prom season as well as throughout the year. Presentations such as this provide students with a view of what happens during an accident, the number of emergency responders who are involved and most importantly, the number of lives affected by one of these tragic events.”

Through the collective efforts of all the participants which included the SADD students and moderator, the Milford police and fire departments, American Medical Response, Cody White Funeral Home, and the Lauralton students and staff that assumed roles in the mock crash scene, the goal was to raise awareness of the potential consequences of unsafe driving habits. Milford Mayor James Richetelli was on hand to speak with the students following the mock crash.
