Summer Academy--a partnership between Lauralton Hall and St. Martin de Porres Academy, the New Haven Jesuit model middle school for girls and boys--recently completed its seventh summer. The two-week experience for the middle school girls featured Language Arts, Spanish and Math, along with a variety of activities. The students enjoyed a presentation by the “Slant of Light” theater troupe, a group of young women who talked with the girls about creating, directing, and performing a play. The students were also given the opportunity to perform in a play for the teachers.

Lauralton Hall rising sophomores volunteered as teacher-aids and mentors to the students. Program principal is Peggy McGowan, Lauralton Hall Physical Education/Health Chair. Mrs. McGowan works in conjunction with Allison Rivera, President of St. Martin de Porres Academy and Christine Ring, Lauralton Hall Campus Minister. This program is partly funded by the generosity of the Mercy Ministry Fund of the Sisters of Mercy of the Northeast.

Each participant receives a full scholarship to the program which strives to encourage, challenge, support and broaden the experiences of the girls while reinforcing their academic skills in an effort to help prepare them for success in the next school year.
