Students support breast cancer awareness

Posted on Oct 24, 2010

Lauralton Hall students are involved in four fund raising events this October in support of breast cancer awareness; last October students raised and donated more than $3,000!

“GIT Your Pink On Day”
On October 15, the Lauralton Hall community dressed in pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This annual non-school uniform “dress down day” supports the Get In Touch (GIT) Foundation and Breast Cancer Awareness Week. Students and faculty members who make a donation have to opportunity to dress entirely in PINK for the entire school day in support of this cause. The Milford-based Get in Touch Foundation is a grassroots non-profit organization committed to breast health awareness and education. The mission of the Get in Touch Foundation, founded by breast cancer survivor MaryAnn Nilan of Milford, is to encourage females of all ages to “Get In Touch” with their bodies, with information, and with each other in the crusade against breast cancer. In their health classes, freshmen received GIT daisy heels classes, a tool donated by the Foundation to educate about breast self exams.   More information on the Get In Touch this organization is available at http://www.getintouchfoundation.org.

Students also decorated the iron fence in front of the campus with pink ribbons and art students created an “all pink” art exhibit on display in the first floor hallway of Mercy Hall. Several of Lauralton’s athletic teams are planning to participate in this effort in their   own unique ways.

Pink Field Hockey Game
On October 11, a pink field hockey game raised additional money for the Get in Touch breast cancer awareness organization. The teams wore pink shirts, socks, ribbons, and laces.  Even the ball was PINK.

Pink Volleyball Games
On October 27, pink volley ball games will raise money for the Norma Pfriem Breast Cancer Center. Players will be in pink and t-shirts will be on sale at the games. The junior varsity game will take place at 3:30pm and the varsity game is at 5pm in the gym.

AP Physics class “launch crossbows” for breast cancer
On October 29, the Advanced Placement physics class, under the direction of Science Department Chair Theresa Napolitano, will soon be using crossbows designed and built by the students to help raise funds for breast cancer research. The goal is for the students to “launch” and hit a mat hanging vertically some distance away. The mat will be sectioned into multicolored squares, each color representing one of the four competing groups--freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

Tickets grouped by the four competing categories are being sold for $1 each. After each “launch” the square that is hit by the bow indicates the group for which a winning ticket will be pulled. Winners of the competition will receive gift certificates to Chili’s, Applebee’s, TGIF, Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks, McDonalds, Bath Works, Dicks, Bob’s, and more. Funds raised from the catapult launch will also be donated to The Get in Touch Foundation. Theresa Napolitano stated that “breast cancer has touched the lives of many members of the community through family and friends and this is a small activity in which we can participate to do our part to help find a cure.”

The Lauralton community is extremely proud of our students for their overwhelming support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
