SADD launches awareness campaign
Posted on Mar 31, 2005 The Lauralton Hall chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) recently sponsored activities to create visibility and awareness about the real-life and legal consequences associated with underage drinking. Think About It … Is It Worth the Risk?, is the latest campaign theme presented by SADD and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and was the focus of activities held at Lauralton Hall on the three days prior to the annual junior/senior prom.
On March 29, a panel of local professionals…attorneys, police officers and emergency room workers teamed with SADD members in a role-play performance portraying the consequences involved with underage drinking. The professionals responded to the decisions of the students involved in the role-play and answered questions.
March 30 was dubbed “Grim Reaper Day” by Lauralton’s SADD members. The “Grim Reaper” randomly and silently pulled chosen students from their classes, showing (not telling) the students how easy it is•how random it is•to become an impaired driving statistic. Each student “victim” who was pulled from class represented someone in American who had just died in a drunk driving crash.
On March 31, a mock crash was staged in Lauralton’s back parking lot to illustrate the horror than can result from drinking and driving. SADD members worked with the Milord Fire and Police Departments, EMT and Smith Funeral Home to depict the mock crash and surrounding activities.
Kudos to the members of SADD, led by President Brianna Serio, ’06, Vice President Colette Toni, ’06 and Secretary Kelly Kerrigan, ’06, along with moderator Sharon Foran, for their innovative planning and implementation of this crucial awareness campaign.
