Area 7th grade girls enjoy Science Olympics

Posted on May 16, 2005

Lauralton Hall’s May 14th Science Olympics for area seventh grade girls was a phenomenal success.  Participants from several Connecticut towns competed in four events including topics from chemistry, biology/population studies and physics. Everyone’s favorite was identifying a strange new chemical that acted like both a liquid and a solid. The students also enjoyed the general topics challenge that involved questions from many science fields including meteorology, geology, chemistry, physics and pharmacology.

Congratulations to the top team competitors of the day:

  • First Place: Team Science Whizzes - from St. Stephen’s School in Hamden
  • Second Place: Team Panthers - from St. Bernadette’s School in East Haven and St. Francis School in New Haven
  • Third Place: Team Molecules -  from All Saints Catholic School in Norwalk and St. Aloysius School in New Canaan

The day concluded with fun science demonstrations by Gina Landini, ’05, who exhibited the principles of force and electricity by using glow-in-the-dark balls, inflated balloons with chemicals (not air) and shocked all present by skewering a balloon that never popped!

Lauralton Hall created Science Olympics for Girls to promote science education for girls and to provide participants the opportunity to enjoy themselves while applying the basic themes of science in a practical, experimental context. Initiated in 2004 and held twice a year, Science Olympics is open to eighth grade girls in the fall and to seventh graders in the spring.

Those interested in participating in future Science Olympics may check Lauralton Hall’s website or contact scavar@lauraltonhall.org for more information.
