On Veterans’ Day weekend, 35 Lauralton sophomores and chaperones participated in a trip to Washington, D.C. that included a very full calendar and beautiful weather.

Before dawn on Thursday, November 9, the trip participants arrived at Lauralton with their pillows and blankets and settled in for a long bus ride to Washington, D.C.

The first day included a stop at Grant Memorial for a group photo, Union Station for lunch and the Capitol Building for a tour led by new interns in the office of Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, ’60. The students next visited the Supreme Court Building and the Library of Congress before enjoying dinner at Hamburger Hamlet. Finally, the group checked in to the College Park Sheraton for the remainder of the evening.

Friday morning began with a trip to Arlington National Cemetery. After viewing the Changing of the Guard and Kennedy grave sites, the group proceeded to Old Alexandria for a relaxing lunch and then set off to Mt. Vernon to visit the brand new visitors’ center and museum. Later that evening, back in D.C., there were tours of memorials and monuments followed by dinner at the ESPN Zone.

Saturday morning brought a tour of National Cathedral with Docent Collette who was engaging and humorous, a visit to National Zoo to see the pandas and Mass at a neighborhood parish. The evening was filled with the Spirit of Washington boat ride up the Potomac which included dinner and a disco party. Kudos to dance contest champions Ariana Mead and Marilyn Cummings, trip coordinator.

Sunday, the final day of the trip, included visits to WWII Memorial and the Smithsonian’s Natural History and Air and Space Museums, thus ending the “grand tour” of Washington, D.C.

Many thanks to Marilyn Cummings for organizing the trip and to Lisa Peterson, Patricia Schnepf and Theresa Tiscia for chaperoning.
