Lights flashing, models strutting, audience applauding, students wondering: "is that dress constructed completely of garbage bags?"  On May 3, with the customary navy jumpers thrown aside, Lauralton Hall's Environmental Club proudly presented their own earth-conscious twist on fashion shows.

In an effort to raise awareness of the harmful chemicals used by clothing manufacturers, students from all grades participated in the second annual, school-wide function. Organized by environmental club officers Ashley Blau, '07, President; Kelley Leen, '08, Vice President; Carly Lind, '08, Secretary; and Colleen Clark, '08 and Johana Borjas, '08, Historians, this event could not have been a success without the participation of their fellow classmates. As the music began to play, each model took her position before an enthusiastic audience and then started that seemingly endless journey down the makeshift runway as the student body cheered and clapped. Despite a little stage fright, twenty-five girls sashayed before their friends and teachers to convey the message that recycled clothes are fun!

Two very unique dresses were created from materials that most people don’t think of as wearable. The descriptions of these dresses were written by their creators.

Adalynn Geer, ’10 enjoys designing and creating clothing. Her dress was made of her sister’s old sheets and ribbon that was cleverly recycled, from a gift received by her mother.

Elise Domyan, ’07 described her ensemble made of black garbage bags as follows: “a stunning little black dress that any girl worth her bottle-deposits would be proud of. Studded with small aluminum decorations, this dress can hold its own in a room surrounded by tame polo shirts and peasant skirts.”

This year for the first time, one of the faculty members participated; Mrs. Waldron sported a tee shirt designed by Molly Riddles, ’09 and Annette Rapice, ’09. The theme of the shirt was “Be at peace with the Planet.”

Lisa Cardassi, ’08 wore a tee shirt that she had tie-dyed in vibrant colors. The stylish tee was so cool that she could have modeled it on any runway in New York City.

The club officers would like to open next year's show to any member of the Lauralton community, so if anyone reading this article feels creative, then she (or he) should plan to participate in the environmental club’s fashion show next spring!
