Science Olympics offered on September 22 for middle school girls

Posted on Aug 02, 2007

To promote science education for girls and to provide participants the opportunity to enjoy themselves while applying the basic themes of science in a practical, experimental context, the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, Lauralton Hall is again offering Science Olympics for Girls. The theme for the event is “Science is FUN!”

Open to sixth, seventh and eighth girls, Science Olympics for Girls is held twice a year. The fall session will take place on September 22, 2007 and the spring session is scheduled for May 17, 2008.

Participants will spend the day doing tasks that show that girls not only do science well, but also have fun while doing it! Teams of no more than four girls will compete in events that focus on the areas of physics, chemistry, earth science, and biology. Each event will last thirty minutes, with the final event being a multiple choice “All Science Challenge”. Each activity is a task that the teams will perform to obtain a result or measurement. The challenges will require teamwork, planning and lateral thinking. The teams will be ordered based on the accuracy of their results and prizes will be awarded to the winning teams.

Program information and registration forms have been provided to science teachers in area middle schools and can be accessed by clicking the link to the right. The registration deadline is September 17, and entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Final details will be sent to registered participants.
