]]> Parents, current and past players from the Lauralton Hall basketball and softball teams gathered at Grassy Hill Country Club on May 29 to honor the 17-year basketball and 19-year softball coaching career of Tom McDonald of Fairfield, and the 15-year career of assistant softball coach Charlie Grimshaw of Milford. The event was organized by the parents of current softball players to pay tribute to the winning coaches and to announce two Lauralton Hall scholarships. The Tom McDonald and Charles Grimshaw Softball Scholarship and the Tom McDonald Basketball Scholarship will each be awarded annually to a graduating member of each team. Players and parents alike have already given close to $5,000. If you are interested in making a contribution to either of the scholarships, please mail donations to Lauralton Hall in care of the Athletic Scholarship Fund. Sponsored by the Connecticut Classical Association, this event annually brings together more than two thousand students of Latin and Greek from all over the state. Academic tests, sporting events, craft workshops, lectures and dramatic presentations keep students in a classical mood. The day gives both teachers and students an opportunity to meet with other classicists and see what kinds of things they are doing. The student led club was created by its parent organization, Kiwanis International. Student officials representing Key Club CT as well as officers of Kiwanis chapters of CT were on hand to present the newly elected Lauralton Key Club officers with their charter, gavel and bell. LH Key Club President Camille de Valdivia, ’07 of Westport began the organizing and chartering process in the fall of 2004. She and other students decided to pursue the creation of a club that would give back to the community through service to others. This focus on service is one of the most important values to the Lauralton Hall mission. de Valdivia, along with Vice President Mary Scinto, ’06 of Fairfield, Secretary Mary Albano, ’06 of Trumbull, Treasurer Sabrina Clark, ’07 of Milford and Editor Ryan Donahue, ’06 of Trumbull accepted and signed the new charter embracing the mission of the Key Club and joining thousands of other chapters across the globe in “Caring - Our Way of Life,” the Key Club motto.

There was a standing room only crowd present to hear the performances of Freshman Choir, Concert Choir, Advanced Vocal Ensemble and the String Ensemble. The audience was treated to music ranging from Vivaldi to the Broadway hit show “Rent.”  Cellist Laura McDonald, ’05 played a beautiful solo and singers Mary Albano, ’06 and Emily Sanchez, ’06 were featured soloists with the choirs. All the musicians performed wonderfully and were given a standing ovation at the end of the evening.

Everyone’s favorite was identifying a strange new chemical that acted like both a liquid and a solid. The students also enjoyed the general topics challenge that involved questions from many science fields including meteorology, geology, chemistry, physics and pharmacology.

]]> A bench made from recycled material, won by Mary Kate Collins, ’05, was recently delivered to Lauralton Hall. In recognition of America Recycles Day in November, Lauralton’s Environmental Club distributed challenge cards provided by the Connecticut America Recycles Day organization, Connecticut Recyclers Coalition. Students and staff participated in the recycling challenge by completing the official challenge cards with a promise to reduce, reuse, recycle and buy recycled products. All Connecticut challenge cards were placed in a drawing and Mary Kate Collins,’05 was the winner of the bench that now graces Lauralton’s campus.    http://lh.awaykehost.com/news/263
