Kudos to Open House participants

Thank you to our students, faculty and parent volunteers…and especially to the visitors to our campus who helped make Open House 2009 successful. We were thrilled to host so many prospective students and their families on October 4.
The Open House format gave visitors the opportunity to spend time at the academic fair, visit classrooms, peruse the clubs and activities area, tour with our students, get a first look at our state-of-the-art science labs and art rooms and partake of some Mercy hospitality.
The presentations and demonstrations were of particular interest to visiting families this year: - Students demonstrated physical fitness workout techniques in the Fitness Center.
- Visitors were treated to a live rehearsal for Lauralton’s upcoming production of The Pirates of Penzance on October 23- 25, at Parsons Auditorium in Milford.
- Graphic design students demonstrated their abilities with Photoshop, a program used in the Graphic Design course, highlighting the versatility of the program.
- Displays in two science labs consisted of individual student research that has been presented on the state and national levels, including Intel Competition. Additionally, the various science courses were represented by lab work or hands-on demonstrations. Also presented were sand analyses and Owl Pellet dissection display, physics activities including accident reconstruction, toy dissection, projectile motion and Bernoulli demos, as well as outside reading textbooks. SmartBoards displayed the community activities in which science courses and clubs participate, and also listed course offerings by year.
- The World Languages Department presented an overview of the computerized Audacity recording program, a unique new program that has been well received by the students.
- Math Department faculty demonstrated the use of Lauralton Hallways, the school’s communications software for students, faculty, parents and alumnae.
Based on attendance at Open House, unprecedented numbers of students are expected to take the entrance test which is offered on two Saturdays: October 17 and 24. Contact Kathleen Shine, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid, at kshine@lauraltonhall.org for information on the admissions process.
