Students benefit from informative assemblies

Posted on Nov 19, 2009

Two informative sessions were presented to Lauralton Hall students on November 19. Tasked with identifying and sponsoring interesting, informative, entertaining programs for students, the Student Enrichment Committee presented SurvivetheDrive®, an automotive safety education program, for juniors and seniors. An independent, not-for-profit, educational organization, SurvivetheDrive provides risk-awareness and safe-driving presentations to school groups. Using letters from students, testimonials, tips for teen drivers, personal anecdotes, props, slide shows and graphic demonstrations, SurvivetheDrive founder Bob Green kept the students focused on safe driving. He said, “it’s all about behavior, understanding, attitude and responsibility behind the wheel. Every driving error (inadvertent, unintentional, choice or judgment) has the potential for violent consequence.”

On the same day, local chiropractor Jason Jenkins, D.C., C.S.C.S. and Jen Palmer, R.N. shared their passion about spinal health care with first-year students and sophomores at a health assembly. The Jenkins/Palmer team has been instrumental in advising Lauralton students in health classes on better, safer ways to use backpacks and other spinal health issues, and they expanded this topic at the assembly.

At the conclusion of the health assembly, Sarah Macone, ’10 described Lauralton’s newest health program for teens, Smackdown Turnaround. Created by the students for the students, the Smackdown Turnaround program offers a variety of tools and activities for students who want to lead a healthier lifestyle and helps students “turn around” unhealthy habits. Activities include yoga, nutrition, spinal health care, skin care and other topics designed for Lauralton students.
