International Fair a smash hit!Posted on Nov 22, 2009
The French, Latin and Spanish Clubs provided the entire student body with a unique, noteworthy, cultural experience on November 16. The language clubs, along with the World Language teachers, labored many hours to create an event that turned out to be highly successful. Games, crafts and food were featured at booths created by the language clubs, each with a unique offering. The Latin booths included a lemongrass wreath craft, Roman numeral bingo, zodiac fortune telling, a vocabulary game relating Latin, French and Spanish words, and a food booth featuring Zatziki dip served with pita bread and Saturnalia cakes. French booths consisted of Mardi Gras mask making, matching the French artist to the correct masterpiece, and a food booth featuring assorted French pastries. Students enjoyed singing along to songs featured in the French karaoke activity. The crepes were the piece de resistance. Spanish club had several games, which included matching the Hispanic flag to the country, Spanish painters to their masterpieces, and famous Hispanics to their contributions. Additionally, Spanish club sponsored craft booths for making a god's eye and yarn bracelets, tattoos and face painting. At the food booth students sampled empanadas, cheese and crackers topped with guayaba, and fresh salsa and tortillas. One of the highlights of the fair was the musical entertainment provided by the father of Kelly Cruz, '10. Senor Nelson Cruz and his Puerto Rican bomba drummer provided a lively beat for the dance ensemble consisting of several young ladies, including Kelly Cruz herself. The dancers call themselves Las Flores de la Ca•a. Wallingford's current Miss Puerto Rico, Kimberly Rosa, made a special guest appearance. The World Languages clubs are to be commended for their unique ideas. The International Fair was well-received, highly successful, fun, and sure to become an annual event. |
