Students help those in need locally and beyond

Posted on Jan 22, 2010

The Fine Art and Photography Club conducted a fundraiser during lunch on January 12. Club members have been using their talents to create beautiful and decorative bracelets from yarn, cord, hemp and beads. The finished pieces were sold to other students in order to raise money for the Beth El Center in Milford. The girls feel that supporting the homeless is a very important cause, especially during this cold winter season. Under the direction of art teachers Judith Doherty and Elizabeth Musante, the Fine Art and Photography Club has donated to organizations in the past, including the Milford Senior Center. "Helping others and offering support out in the community is part of what we teach our girls here at Lauralton,” said Mrs. Doherty.

Lauralton students are continuously showing their generosity by helping those in need. The outpouring of support shown by the Lauralton community for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti was overwhelming. On a recent school “dress down” day, students, faculty, and staff donated almost $1,400 to Catholic Relief Services to aid Haiti.

Another “dress down” school day will be held soon to raise money for Holy Cross High School that is staffed by the Sisters of Mercy in Kolamugana, Philippines, and was badly damaged by fire. The house where the Sisters of Mercy reside burned to the ground and four rooms in the school were destroyed.

The Lauralton community is also planning to help raise funds to support C.A.S.A., a psychiatric clinic in the Andes, Peru that cannot afford to operate without the financial assistance of generous individuals since it does not have the economic support of the Peruvian government.

The Lauralton Hall community takes pride in the knowledge that our students are always ready to reach out to those in need.
