NHS celebrates “Souper” Bowl

Posted on Feb 25, 2010

While much of the country was thinking about the great athletic contest known as the Super Bowl, the young ladies of Lauralton Hall’s National Honor Society were thinking about making a “souper” difference in their local communities.

On Friday, February 5, it was all about the warming benefits of a bowl of soup. The members of the National Honor Society spearheaded their own Souper Bowl, asking each member of the school community to donate one simple can of soup! With green, recyclable collection bags stationed in each TA, donations of classic tomato, New England clam chowder, chicken noodle, and beef and vegetable were thoughtfully donated.

“Today’s soup drive showed how the smallest offering - a can of soup - can make the biggest difference in assisting people in the community,” said NHS Co-Moderator and English teacher Pam Boynton. “When the officers learned that the shelves of local food pantries were emptied after the holidays, they came up with a creative and fun way in which to supplement them,” added Chris Cook, NHS Co-Moderator and mathematics teacher.

At the end of the day, when all of the soup was collected and counted, four TAs were lauded for their individual efforts: the freshmen in Mrs. Cook’s TA, the sophomores in Mrs. Napolitano’s TA, the juniors in Dr. Cavar’s TA, and the seniors of Mrs. Melmed’s TA. The NHS filled more than 26 bags with soups and stews and Mrs. Cook estimated that more than 650 cans (which translates into 650 hot and soothing lunches or dinners) were donated to the John Rigley Food Pantry at St. Mary Church in Milford, the Sterling House Community Center in Stratford, and local food pantries and shelters in Fairfield and Norwalk.

Souper Job, Lauralton Hall!
