UN Director of Mercy Global Concern visits LauraltonPosted on Oct 06, 2010
Deirdre Mullan, RSM, Director of Mercy Global Concern at the United Nations, spent the day at Lauralton Hall on October 5. She is the first guest speaker to participate in the exciting new “In-Residence” guest lecturer series. Mercy Global Concern is the mechanism by which all those associated with the Sisters of Mercy may interact with the UN system and advocate for the less privileged within a huge network of international bodies. She will be speaking to the Lauralton Hall students about global poverty and global citizenship, a subject that Sr. Deirdre works tirelessly to improve in various communities around the world. She is constantly helping to achieve significant improvements in peoples’ lives, including better health care, education, and the elimination of extreme hunger and poverty. As a representative of the Sisters of Mercy worldwide at the United Nations, Sr. Deirdre Mullan has traveled extensively around the world, lecturing and promoting justice work at the local, national, and international levels. She challenges governments around the world to implement policies and programs that promote economic, environmental, and social justice. Sr. Deirdre grew up in Northern Ireland, during wartime between Northern Ireland’s Catholics and Protestants, where she witnessed violence and destruction, so she has seen what hatred can do first-hand. The compassion she learned from her family runs through her work at the United Nations, as she advocates for impoverished people around the world. Sr. Deirdre has extensive experience as a keynote speaker at conferences and workshops across the globe. She states, “What I am learning is that we need to educate people to become global citizens if we are to repair our broken world. Young people across the world are both receptive and engaged with this idea.” Click here for the Connecticut Post article on Sister Deirdre's visit to Lauralton.
