English Department gets it "write"Posted on Oct 25, 2010
To launch a celebration of the National Day of Writing on October 20, the English Department coordinated a wall-sized mural, representing words and genres and all modes of writing. The celebration kicked off on October 19, as students in all grades chose colored Sharpie pens and wrote their favorite words on the writing wall in the back of the school cafeteria. Included were favorite lines from poems or stories, headlines from international news articles, lines from favorite movies or songs, recipes of dear friends or relatives and quotations from famous speeches. Donna Gibson, coordinator of the event and a 20-year member of the department, deliberated between Mr. Darcy’s proposal to Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice and Red Sox announcer Don Orsillo’s description of an opposing team’s pitcher, “The fidgety left-hander winds up and fires!” Pam Boynton, teacher of the Fairy Tales as Literature elective, penned “Once upon a time…” In a world of ten-second sound bites, tweets on Twitter, wall postings on Facebook, audio books and iPod apps, the written word that puts pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is often lost in the shuffle. But there is inherent beauty and power in the written word and that is the nature of the celebration of National Writing Day. The mural remained in place throughout the day on October 20, and included writings by faculty and staff in addition to the students’ contributions.
