Lauralton congratulates National Merit Scholarship FinalistPosted on Feb 15, 2005 Elizabeth Damm, ’05, has been named a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Along with approximately 15,000 seniors nationally, she was selected from a group of 16,200 semifinalists named last September. Liz, who hails from Fairfield, is the daughter of William and Laura Damm. An honors level student, she plays varsity basketball and is active in Youth and Government and the French Club. She serves as Environmental Club Treasurer, Sports Editor for the Yearbook and reporter and Assistant Editor for the CT Teen column of the Connecticut Post. Liz was also awarded the Rensselaer Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Math and Science. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that high school students enter by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.3 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements. 50,000 of the highest scoring participants in the fall 2003 PSAT received commended status. 16,200 students nationally were named National Merit Program Semifinalists, representing the top scorers in each state. From these students, about 8,200, representing less than one percent of each state’s high school seniors, will be offered National Merit scholarships for college. All winners of Merit Scholarship® awards (Merit Scholar® designees) will be chosen from the Finalist group, based on their abilities, skills, accomplishmenta, academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay. Beginning in March and continuing to mid-June, NMSC will notify approximately 8,200 Finalists that they have been selected to receive a Merit Scholarship® award. The Lauralton community congratulates Liz on her academic prowess, her active participation at Lauralton Hall and in the community and this well deserved honor. |
