Students take academic prizes at State Latin DayPosted on May 20, 2005 Thirty four toga-clad Lauralton students along with Latin teachers Mary Koehm and JoAnne Piedmont participated in State Latin Day on May 17 at Holiday Hill in Cheshire. Sponsored by the Connecticut Classical Association, this event annually brings together more than two thousand students of Latin and Greek from all over the state. Academic tests, sporting events, craft workshops, lectures and dramatic presentations keep students in a classical mood. The day gives both teachers and students an opportunity to meet with other classicists and see what kinds of things they are doing. School banners display great artistry and creativity while the chariot races test not only the runners’ speed but also the durability of their vehicles. Four Lauralton students won prizes this year for their success in the academic testing. Kerry Maher, ’05, a fourth year Latin student, was a double winner--Summa Cum Laude in Derivatives and Cum Laude in Costume Design; Este Yarmosh, ’05, who began Latin this year, won Summa Cum Laude in Geography; Megan Paqua, ’07 won Cum Laude in Mythology and Laura Lysaght, ’07 won Cum Laude in Derivatives. Tired but happy at the end of the day, the students gave the event an “A +” and are already planning how they will spend the day next year. Maybe they will build a catapult!
