Lauralton students shine at Youth and Government ConferencePosted on Mar 31, 2006Lauralton’s Youth and Government delegation, 85 members strong, was the largest of the 22 delegations at this year’s Connecticut YMCA Youth and Government Conference held in Hartford from March 24 - 26. Students from high schools throughout the state functioned in a mock state legislature at the Connecticut Capitol and Legislative Office Building. Lauralton was the only private school with its own delegation. Twelve of Lauralton’s bills, including those authored by Rebecca Battey, ’06; Alex Bielecki, ’08; Ashley Blau, ’07; Sam Free, ’08; Jocelyn Gaudett, ’07; Alex Geer, ’08; Allison Kirk, ’07; Trish Kostiuk, ’06; Lauren Lyga, ’08; Lauren Marmol, ’07; Kate McClain, ’07; Erinn McGrath, ’06; Monica Medina, ’08; Mary O’Connell, ’08; Rachel Oberg, ’06; Lauren Piontek, ’07; Caroline Raccuia, ’08; Maggie Reville, ’08; Kim Rogers, ’06; Thelma Santiago, ’08; Jenny Solomon, ’08; Abbey Stein, ’08; Kelly Zullo, ’08, passed both houses and were signed by the Governor. In total, more than one quarter of Lauralton Hall’s bills passed. Under the direction of social studies teacher Mark Allen, Lauralton’s Youth and Government Club participated in another successful YAG Conference experience. Each year Youth and Government members work hard learning the fundamentals of debate, bill writing, and basic parliamentary procedure in preparation for the spring conference. Congratulations to this year’s Youth and Government Club members for continuing the proud Lauralton tradition of award winning delegations. |
