Students donate $1000 to Ugandan schools programPosted on Dec 12, 2007
The Humanities Club recently raised more than $1,000 to help Ugandan children who live on the streets; go hungry; and have to hide at night from a rebel army that kidnaps and turns children as young as 7 into soldiers. The funds were given to the California-based Invisible Children’s Schools for Schools program, which builds and improves schools in Northern Uganda--a region devastated by civil war. Since last year, students here have raised almost $3,500 for the cause. “It doesn’t seem fair that while we have so much, others have so little,” said Lauralton senior and Humanities Club President Katie Watts, 17, of Fairfield. “Our club is all about helping people.” Humanities Club members raised the money by selling Invisible Children T-shirts and bracelets and hosting a dress-down day, where for a $2 donation students could wear causal clothes to school instead of the required blue and white uniforms. “It was a fun day, but also helped us realize how doing just a little can make a big difference,” said Lauralton senior and Humanities Club Vice President Nicole Frey, 17, of Newtown.
