Students celebrate Black History Month

Posted on Feb 18, 2008

On February 14, Lauralton Hall celebrated Black History Month with two meaningful and entertaining assemblies.

Freshmen and sophomores were enthralled with a performance by the renowned Makati Company of Musicians. Students participated in the chanting, singing, and dancing as Mikata demonstrated, through their vibrant performance, the communal and participatory nature of music in Africa, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Haiti, as well as Africa’s strong cultural links to the US, Caribbean and South America.

Juniors and seniors were entertained and enlightened by a theatre piece written and directed by Dexter Singleton, Executive Director of Collective Consciousness Productions. In this performance the players relived the life and times of leading civil rights figures including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall and others through stirring monologues, scenes and vignettes. This production contained gospel music and other freedom songs made popular by the era.
