Students earn gold at Lauralton Science OlympicsPosted on May 28, 2008
Middle school girls from throughout Connecticut recently built a fork lift and met owls, falcons and hawks to learn first-hand about predator-prey relationships during Lauralton Hall’s annual spring Science Olympics held this year on May 17. Guided by Lauralton faculty and students, participants worked in teams to “compete” in problem-solving events related to meteorology, geology, chemistry, physics, biology and more. The winners included: In the 8th grade category: 2nd place - Positive Protons from St. Mary’s School in Milford: Ally Giannini, Roxanne Raiola, Emily Roth and Corrine Yasevac. 3rd place - Amphibious Dolphins from East Haven Academy in East Haven: Kathy Qingyu Xu, Amanda Sorsiri, Alisia Cintron and Megan Pearce. In the 7th grade category: 2nd place - Moran Microbes from Moran Middle School in Wallingford: Olivia DeFilippo, Amber Schumacher and Alicia Kennedy. 3rd place - All Saints Asteroids from All Saints Catholic in Norwalk: Kellie Siciliano, Emily Ruther, Alex Garvey and Natalia Dedios. In the 6th grade category: 2nd place - Galactic Scientists from East Haven Academy in East Haven: Dorothy Payne and Sarah Parlato. 3rd place - NEAJ from Greenwich Catholic Academy in Greenwich: Julia Capogrossi, Alexa Feliciano, Nicolette Lustrino and Emily Gau. In the mixed-grades category: 2nd place - Joules from Tyrell Middle School in Wolcott: Brittany Maia, Cara Valenti and Julia Vanasse. 3rd place - “And 1” from St. Martin de Porres: Akayla McKinnie, Asia Barnes, Ki’Yanta Stevenson and Xena-Aiza Greene. Lauralton Hall hosts Science Olympics twice each year. The fall “games” are scheduled for Sept. 27, 2008.
