LH SADD chapter launches sticker shock project

MILFORD, CT - On March 25, 2009 the Lauralton Hall SADD chapter will launch a sticker shock project targeting adults in the area. The stickers are designed to be placed on multi-packs of alcoholic beverages and on paper bags used in liquor stores. In addition to the stickers, stores are given the option of placing a sign, identical to the sticker but larger, in the window or at the check out counter.

The sticker project is part of a cooperative effort between the Lauralton Hall SADD group and the MADD Connecticut Youth in Action program. The students involved in the Lauralton Hall SADD chapter hope to raise awareness among adults who may be interested in providing alcohol to their underage peers. They are hoping that this project will engage adults and get them to think about providing alcohol to anyone under 21. “This is only the start of great things to come from this group. Everyone in SADD is so passionate about teen issues and it’s incredible to see the progress we have made in the past 3 years,” said senior Jessica Makrinos of Stamford, President of the Lauralton Hall chapter of SADD.

“The purpose of sticker shock is to raise awareness among adults in the community,” said Lauren Iannucci, Youth Coordinator with MADD Connecticut. “The youth involved with this project are very dedicated and concerned that adults readily provide alcohol to their underage peers and they do not want this practice to continue.”

The students will begin the sticker shock project at TJ’s Liquor Store and Friendly’s. Their hope is to also bring this campaign into other area towns and possibly partner with other SADD chapters in those towns.

Founded in 1980, MADD’s mission is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking. The MADD Youth in Action program partners youth and adults to work on community-based projects aimed at reducing access of alcohol to underage youth. Young people are very much an integral part of the mission and MADD has successfully become a powerful force in the prevention of underage drinking.
