Prestigious Claven Awards to be presentedPosted on Mar 27, 2009
Six notable individuals will be honored by a sold-out crowd at the Claven XXVII Awards Ceremony and Dinner on Saturday, April 25, at the Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield. Inaugurated in 1980 on the occasion of the school’s 75th anniversary, this is a lifetime achievement award named in honor of Lauralton Hall’s foundress, Mother Mary Augustine Claven. The Claven Award is the highest distinction given by the school and is conferred every other year on exceptional individuals in recognition of their outstanding example, service, and achievement. The 2009 Claven Award recipients are: Ann D’Addario, a native of Fairfield and long time resident of Trumbull, for her community service and philanthropy; for her years of involvement with church (St. Theresa’s of Trumbull), cultural, civic and charitable activities such as Bridgeport’s Barnum Festival; for her generosity and many years of volunteer work at various organizations such as St. Vincent’s Hospital; and for her support of children and education. Jane Donnelly Daly of Pennsylvania (formerly of Bridgeport, Stratford, and Milford), a member of the Class of 1954, for her life as a compassionate nurse, wife, and mother of twelve; for her support of women and pro-life activities: for her assistance with immigrants and refugees; for her volunteer work at the soup kitchen; and for being a friend to the sick and troubled of her parish as well as being a Eucharistic minister and a member of the home-school association, the parish’s school board and its advisory board. Mary Rose D’Angelo, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Theology and Director of the Gender Studies Program at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, a member of the Class of 1964 who received both a Ph.D. and M. Phil. from Yale University, is being honored for her contributions to the field of theology; for her interest in the personal development of her students and for her concerns for women, for the life of the church and for the well being of people in our society; and for being an excellent role model of a humane and compassionate scholar. Captain Patricia Miller, USN (ret.), a native of Fairfield and current resident of Virginia, a member of the Class of 1968, for her service to our nation; for her admirable qualities of self-discipline, leadership and values of honor, loyalty and commitment; and for her stellar award-winning career including three Legion of Merit medals, two defense Meritorious Service medals, and many more. The Reverend Peter H. McClean Award honors the memory of Father McClean, revered mentor, chaplain and lifelong friend of Lauralton Hall by recognizing the dedication of a man whose enduring friendship and unusual generosity endear him to the Lauralton Hall community. The 2009 McClean recipient is: Robert Scinto of Fairfield, Chairman of R. D. Scinto, Inc., for being a successful achiever who shows concern for others, demonstrates love of his community, and finds time to serve on many boards which benefit others (including as Chairman and CEO of the William Pitt Foundation), especially the young; for understanding the importance of self-discipline, commitment, and hard work; and for his exemplary contributions of leadership, philanthropy, and assistance to the citizens of Southern CT and especially for his compassionate service to young men and women. The Reverend Cornelius J. Doherty Distinguished Service Award pays tribute to Father Doherty, priest, chaplain, friend and much loved teacher of Lauralton Hall by honoring a devoted faculty or staff member who, rich in spirit, has given of self through outstanding service. The 2009 Doherty recipient is: Margaret Fagan Casey of Milford, a member of the Class of 1932, is being honored posthumously for her lasting contribution as an alumna and as a Lauralton faculty member who was also a 1981 recipient of the Claven Award; for her strength, resilience, and creativity in helping her own family and assisting others; for her lifetime advocacy of the physically challenged; and for being an articulate and affirming, informed and industrious, generous and loving role model.
