Jonnie Guerra to lead poetry reading on November 16

The Lauralton Hall English Department is pleased to host Emily Dickinson scholar Dr. Jonnie Guerra. She is the second highly esteemed guest to speak in the school’s exciting new “In-Residence” guest lecturer series this year. After two days of teaching English classes at Lauralton, Dr. Guerra will lead a poetry reading of some of Emily Dickinson’s most beloved poems read by Lauralton Hall students, faculty, and staff with commentary provided by Dr. Guerra. The poetry reading will take place on Tuesday, November 16, in the Claven Auditorium from 3pm - 4pm. In true Emily Dickinson style, guests will be treated to apple cider, gingerbread cake, and tea prior to the reading from 2:30pm-3pm in the auditorium. Dr. Iadarola honored by Columbus Day Committee

Italian-Americans and others from all walks of life in the Greater New Haven community gathered on October 8 at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven for the annual Columbus Day Heritage Dinner sponsored by the Columbus Day Committee of Greater New Haven.

An Evening with Tony Dungy and Dan Patrick set for December 10

Join the fun on Friday, December 10, 2010, at 7:30pm in the Lauralton Hall gymnasium when the school presents An Evening with Tony Dungy and Dan Patrick. The legendary coach and award-winning sportscaster will debate a wide range of topics including top athletes of the day, the state of the NFL, women’s sports, Super Bowl XLV predictions and a whole lot more. Admission is $50 for adults and $25 for students. Space permitting, entrance at the door on the day of the event is $75. 

Students recognized by national award program

Fifteen 2010 graduates and 8 current seniors have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) Exams. 

First Lieutenant Megan Dobbins, ’04 speaks to history students

On October 8, history students spent time with Megan Dobbins,’04 learning about her recent experience in Afghanistan and the realities of that country and culture.

UN Director of Mercy Global Concern visits Lauralton

Deirdre Mullan, RSM, Director of Mercy Global Concern at the United Nations, spent the day at Lauralton Hall on October 5. She is the first guest speaker to participate in the exciting new “In-Residence” guest lecturer series.

Lauralton thanks Open House participants

Thank you to the students, faculty, parent volunteers and especially to all the wonderful visitors to our campus on October 3 who made Open House 2010 a smashing success! We were thrilled to host so many prospective students and their families.

Grad shares China experiences with global studies students

Global studies students at Lauralton recently learned about China first-hand from Lorraine Jarusinsky Conway,’59 who spent time in China teaching English to Chinese students. She generously shared her knowledge of Chinese culture as well as resources from her experiences in China such as comic books, language books, McDonalds ads in Chinese, Chinese gum, recordings of her Chinese students singing, and many more items that she collected during her travels. The students found this experience interesting and enriching.

Lauralton celebrates Mercy Day

Mercy Day is an observance that Lauralton shares with all other Sister of Mercy institutions and ministries. Historically, Mercy Day recalls the opening of the House of Mercy in Dublin, Ireland, on September 24, 1827. This establishment realized Catherine McAuley’s dream of creating a place where the poor, especially women and young girls, would find safe lodging and instruction in their faith and in skills that would lead to honorable employment. This work at the House of Mercy led Catherine McAuley to establish the Sisters of Mercy in1831.
