Students recognized by national award programs

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and Commended Scholars 

Seniors Sara Brennan and Alyssa Reyes were recently named National Merit Semifinalists, and Erin McGrath and Victoria Pennick have been designated Commended Scholars. 

AP Physics students launch eggonauts

Seniors in AP Physics classes participated in the eggonaut project on October 17. The students were challenged to combine their knowledge of forces to design a rocket to safely carry an uncooked egg upwards and land the egg without breaking it. The accelerating force was provided by a bicycle pump that pumped air into soda bottles containing varied amounts of water. Working in teams, the students received points for “egg survival” and “time aloft.” The students enjoyed the opportunity to put to practice concepts learned in class while enjoying a fun project.

 

Guest speaker discusses business trends

Seniors in the Introduction to Business class, having just completed a unit project on Chinese business trends, had a guest speaker on October 11. Mr. Gene Baldino, father of Abby Baldino, ’05, works for a company that is considering investing in businesses that will be located in China. In his presentation, “China: A Country of Contrasts,” Mr. Baldino used pictures in PowerPoint to illustrate his discussion of the contrasts between big Chinese cities that resemble any big, American city and the poverty found in rural areas. His discussion included several topics ranging from currency, globalization, and sweatshop workers to communism providing a minimum standard of living to all, population control, local diseases and food. Students asked many thoughtful questions during this extremely interesting presentation.

Eighth graders have fun at LH Science Olympics

To promote science education for girls and provide eighth grade participants the opportunity to have fun while applying the basic themes of science in a practical, experimental context, the school’s Science Department hosted its second annual one-day Science Olympics for eighth graders on October 8.

Juniors receive class rings

The Junior Ring Ceremony was held in the evening again this year to give family and friends of members of the Class of 2007 the opportunity to attend. On October 5 the juniors received their rings from President Barbara Griffin in a lovely ceremony held in the chapel, followed by a reception. The next morning juniors and seniors gathered in the cafeteria for a special breakfast. The seniors welcomed the juniors as upperclassmen by performing the traditional “ring turn” for good luck. 

Napolitano to coach Crusaders softball

Theresa Napolitano has been named Head Softball Coach at Lauralton Hall. Formerly head softball coach at Amity High School, Mrs. Napolitano replaces Tom McDonald who retired after coaching 19 years at the school.

Best and the rest for the past week ...a Connecticut Post editorial

Thumbs up to Lauralton Hall and all of its students and staff past and present on celebrating the school’s centennial. Founded in 1905 by Sister M. Augustine Claven, the all-girls school has produced some of the most successful women in the region, including U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-3. In honor of the anniversary, each student wrote a letter to the Sisters of Mercy on staff thanking them personally for the welcoming and engaging community of Lauralton Hall. Also honored were the faculty of the school, who helped earn Lauralton Hall the reputation as one of the area’s most prestigious all-girls schools. And perhaps best of all, for the students at least, the ceremonies concluded with a declaration by the school’s President Barbara Griffin: no school on Monday.

MILFORD - The Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, Lauralton Hall on Friday kicked off what will be a school-year-long celebration of its 100th anniversary, a longevity that’s rare in a world where Catholic schools are closing and enrollment is dwindling, said Kathleen Kearns Donahue, director of alumnae relations.

MILFORD -- The angels don't live upstairs anymore. The students don't wear beanies to chapel anymore, either. But in all of the important ways, Lauralton Hall is the same school as when it opened 100 years ago.
