After weeks of rehearsal, the Lauralton Hall musical, Little Shop of Horrors, was presented November 18 - 20 at Parson’s Auditorium in Milford. The three performances were well received by enthusiastic audiences. Mary Albano, ’06, Laura Blagys, ’07, Samantha Free, ’08, Trish Kostiuk, ’06, Kate LaBella, ’07, Kiersten Morsanutto, ’06, Meghan Pelletier, ’06, Kim Rogers, ’06, Kelsey Rogers, ’08 and Melissa Salandra, ’07 had lead roles. This story about a man-eating plant was a huge success with all ages! Congratulations to the entire cast and crew…and a very special thank you to Music Director Margy Sargent, Sue Cavar and Sharon Foran for another successful musical performance!

In recognition of America Recycles Day on November 15, the Environmental Club distributed promise cards provided by Connecticut Recyclers Coalition. Students and staff participated in a recycling challenge by completing the cards with a promise to reduce, reuse, recycle and buy products made from recycled materials. The cards have been entered to both state and national drawings for prizes. Lauralton has participated in the program for the past three years and has won prizes on the state level each year: a Dell computer on behalf of Kathleen Keenoy, ’07, $150 toward the purchase of library books on behalf of Jane Becker, ’07 and a bench made from recycled milk bottles on behalf of Mary Kate Collins, ’05. This year students, administrators and faculty and staff members entered 386 promise cards. “Everyone hopes that we will win again; that would make it four years in a row,” said Ashley Blau ’07, secretary of the Environmental Club.

Once again the Lauralton community reaches out to the poor and neglected in our local community by assembling Thanksgiving baskets for several dozen families. Each homeroom donates a variety of food items and gift certificates for turkeys. Happy to share what they have with those less fortunate, the students deliver the baskets to Mercy Learning Center in Bridgeport for distribution to needy families. This annual event is one of the many service projects the young women of Lauralton do to carry out the Mercy mission of Lauralton Hall and to emulate the love of Mother McAuley for the poor.

On the November 10 to 13 Veterans’ Day long weekend, 40 Lauralton sophomores and chaperones participated in a trip to Washington, DC that included a very full calendar.

LH CARES (Lauralton Hall Community Always Respects Everyone), open to any Lauralton student, is a club that celebrates the diversity which enriches our lives. In addition to sponsoring activities at Lauralton, the club participates in programs and activities with the diversity or multicultural clubs of other schools. On November 9, club members traveled to Notre Dame High School in West Haven to share a pot luck supper, get to know each other and explore some ideas for future joint activities.
LH CARES and Notre Dame’s Minority Student Union are now working on preliminary plans for more joint activities to be scheduled this year.

The freshman class participated on November 10 in a retreat day facilitated by Tony Bellizzi of Hope for the Children Foundation. The retreat gave students an opportunity to reflect on their faith and their relationship with Jesus Christ made manifest through their relationships with one another and with all they love. Tony raised the awareness of the freshmen about the difficulties of children in our world. The retreat closed with a guided meditation in Chapel which enabled the students to really get in touch with the love of Jesus for them as individuals and as a class. The mission of the Hope for the Children Foundation is to “let us go about our lives in such a way so as to give hope for the children.” This is a not for profit charitable and educational organization which conducts specific projects and events and raises funds to expand opportunities and increase the development of young people around the world. In an October 18th ceremony marked by the traditional lighting of candles, the Lauralton Hall chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 37 new members. "The inductees tonight are a special group, recognized for their academic prowess and attention to community service, leadership, and character," said Mrs. Pam Boynton, Co-Moderator of the chapter. "We are so very proud of all that the young women have accomplished," added Mrs. Donna Gibson, Co-Moderator. "It will be our pleasure to watch as they grow and shape their world," Gibson said.

During the week of November 17 when Lauralton celebrated Spirit Week, Student Council sponsored a series of fun theme days. On Monday, students wore college sweatshirts with their uniforms. Tuesday was Twin Day and the girls had teachers “seeing double” as they paired up to wear matching outfits and hairstyles. Tie-Dye Day, a new Spirit Week theme, was Wednesday. The school-wide favorite, Decade Day, fell on Thursday when freshmen personified the Fifties in poodle skirts and ribbons; sophomores recalled the Sixties in bohemian blouses and skirts; juniors wore bell bottoms and tie-dyes in tribute to the Seventies; and the seniors brought back the Eighties with side ponytails, green eye shadow, oversized sweatshirts, denim skirts and high heels.

The most recent phase of the Lauralton Hall technology plan included the launching of online community interactive software to give alumnae the opportunity to reconnect with each other and with Lauralton, and stay in touch and informed. This software also provides alumnae, parents and friends a means to make online donations to the Annual Fund, learn about upcoming events, and more.
