Teacher Appreciation Week, May 2 through 6, was celebrated in a big way at Lauralton Hall, beginning with a proclamation issued by a vote of the Board of Trustees at their May Board meeting:
The Board of Trustees of the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, Lauralton Hall extends its appreciation to the faculty of Lauralton Hall for their hard work, dedication and professional excellence.

On May 5, members of the Class of 2005 participated in the annual Arbor Day celebration, a long-standing tradition of all Lauralton Hall graduating classes. The seniors gathered between the grotto and the gym to plant their Arbor Day gift to the school…a Japanese maple. As tradition dictates, the ceremony included the blessing of the tree and refreshments provided by the junior class.

Spending six days with a Spanish family, viewing masterpieces in the Prado Museum, seeing the king and queen of Spain, watching a flamenco performance on the same stage where many of Cervantes’ works were first performed, visiting castles and cathedrals, eating octopus, sea urchin, eels, suckling pig, and much more...that’s how eight Lauralton students spent their spring vacation. Seniors Malina Boreyko, Anna Buccanfuso, Christine Rogers, Kim Rusatsky, Erin Strong, and juniors Alex Kirik, Rachel Oberg, and Sarah VanDine participated in this memorable experience.

Members of the Class of 2006 participated in the annual Junior Retreat on April 11. Representing SON Ministry from Long Island, Frank Maiello and Marian Zahara led the juniors in prayer experiences using music, videos and small group activities. The focus of the retreat was “appreciation,” and the group leaders worked to bring the students from self appreciation as beautiful creations of God to the appreciation of friends and family and, finally, to an appreciation for creation. Frank and Marian demonstrated through personal sharing and dialogue that each one of us has an impact on the world. The juniors created a poster filled with “world problems” and concluded their retreat by covering the problems with images of themselves to show that their gifts and talents can make the world a better place.

In celebration of Earth Day, the Environmental Club coordinated activities each day during the week of April 11. Earth Day observance began on Monday with the distribution of green lollipops to remind students to save the earth. Later that day, club members offered “dirt” pies to students. “The dirt pies remind students to love the earth,” said Sian Mara, ’05, president of the club. “We stuffed them with lots of gummy worms,” added Sarah Pelley, ’05, Vice President. A trash-free-lunch marathon took place Tuesday through Thursday. Each day that a student had a trash-free lunch (cloth napkin instead of paper, real flatware instead of plastic, permanent water bottles and reusable containers), she could register for a raffle prize. Raffle prizes included water bottles, tee shirts, and a $100 grand prize! “We’re really against zip-loc bags,” said Donna DiMassa, club moderator. “The chemicals that keep the bags soft are potentially harmful to individuals as well as the environment.” The week culminated with a casual dress day for juniors and seniors. Juniors were assigned yellow, representing the sun, as their dress down color and seniors dressed in blue for the sea and sky. On Tuesday, April 26, freshmen and sophomores will celebrate Earth Day with casual dress. Freshmen will wear brown for the earth and sophomores will be in green for grass, trees, and plants.

On April 15 the freshmen and sophomores at Lauralton Hall participated in A Passion for Justice: The Prudence Crandall Story, presented by The Anti-Defamation League’s A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Institute and Young Audiences of Connecticut. This unique program, geared to middle and high school students, addresses the issues of prejudice within the general population and assists educators in creating a multi-cultural, non-biased learning environment in which all students can be successful. The program was presented through an interactive, quality arts performance created to help develop the whole student.

Lauralton Hall has entered into partnership with a web-based software company to provide individualized classroom websites for teachers to post homework, upload class notes and other files and provide links to relevant internet sites. Parents and students now have one easy place to find homework assignments, upcoming test dates, class announcements and a class calendar. Web pages for student clubs and parent organizations are currently in the final development stage, and the software also includes a private area for teachers to store files as well as a web-integrated school calendar system.

The April book sale sponsored by the LH CARES (Lauralton Hall Community Always Respects Everyone) student organization in conjunction with the Scholastic Community Book Sale program, was a huge success! Book sale profits will help stock the St. Martin de Porres Nativity School Library. A tuition free Catholic school, St. Martin de Porres will open in Hamden in the fall of 2005 to serve children from the greater New Haven area who could not otherwise afford a Catholic education.

The Lauralton Hall chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) recently sponsored activities to create visibility and awareness about the real-life and legal consequences associated with underage drinking. Think About It … Is It Worth the Risk?, is the latest campaign theme presented by SADD and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and was the focus of activities held at Lauralton Hall on the three days prior to the annual junior/senior prom.

Congratulations to Emily Sanchez, ’06 and Nina Demeter, ’07 for their selection as members of the 2005 All State Choir. Emily and Nina attended the All State Festival in Stamford on March 17 through 19 where they were able to perform with other top singers from the state. Sponsored by the Connecticut Music Educators Association, the Festival included three days of rehearsal which culminated in a concert on Saturday afternoon, March 19.
