Students participate in COLT Poetry Recitation Contest

On April 11 six students represented Lauralton Hall in the annual Poetry Recitation Contest sponsored by the Connecticut Council of Language Teachers (COLT). Rashea Banks, ’09, Nina Demeter, ’07 and Stephanie Dillon, ’07 presented poems of their own choosing in Spanish, while Laura Boynton, ’08, Dana Miraglia, ’07 and Rachelle Pierre, ’07 competed at various levels with selections of French poetry.

These girls joined with approximately 1200 students from across the state for a full afternoon hosted by the students and faculty of New Britain High School. Thirteen different languages comprised the scope of the day’s competition. The program consisted of State and City officials who welcomed the students and praised them for attaining this level of achievement, an elaborate competition schedule, a bag supper, entertainment by New Britain High School students studying performing arts and presentation of the various gold, silver and bronze medals for recitation. The medals were awarded based on accuracy, memorization and interpretation of the selected works. 

Laura Boynton and Stephanie Dillon captured silver medals in their respective French and Spanish categories and Nina Demeter proudly took home a bronze medal. All expressed high praise for their worthy competitors.               



Students help needy families celebrate Easter

Lauralton Hall students embraced the spirit of holiday giving again this Easter. Easter baskets and gift certificates donated by the students were delivered on April 10 to Mercy Learning Center in Bridgeport for distribution to families touched by the Center.

McAuley Guild heralds spring with fashion show

More than 200 guests including students and their moms, aunts and grandmothers, as well as administrators, staff members and alumnae turned out for the annual McAuley Guild Mother/Daughter Fashion Show held this year at The Waterview in Monroe on April 2. With a spectacular view of Lake Zoar, The Waterview proved to be a lovely venue for this event which was held on a Sunday this year rather than on a weeknight as in previous years. The guests enjoyed an elaborate brunch and fashion show with styles from Cargo Bay, New England Bridal, Pink by the Harbor, Style of Newtown and Talbots, along with lots and lots of terrific raffle prizes. In addition, guests had the opportunity to purchase items from the Lauralton Line and from boutique vendors whose wares ranged from jewelry to handbags to stationery. With her usual witty commentary, Mrs. Pam Boynton kept the fashion show running smoothly as the models--students, mothers and staff members--"strutted their stuff" on the runway.

Victory for Lauralton’s Mock Trial Team

Mock Trial is an organization supported and coordinated by the Connecticut Consortium for Law & Citizenship Education that gives students with an interest in the law an opportunity to prepare and present hypothetical cases for trial. Lauralton’s Mock Trial team recently participated in the long-anticipated regional competition at New Haven Court House against teams from Hill High School and West Haven High School.

Students inspired by outreach assembly

On March 29, the Lauralton community was exceptionally privileged to welcome to Lauralton Hall two remarkable women…professional nurses whose compassion and skill have been helping others, not only in Connecticut, but around the world. These women have traveled to Brazil, Peru, Columbia, Nepal, Burma, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, Bangladesh and other regions.

Lauralton students shine at Youth and Government Conference

Lauralton’s Youth and Government delegation, 85 members strong, was the largest of the 22 delegations at this year’s Connecticut YMCA Youth and Government Conference held in Hartford from March 24 - 26. Students from high schools throughout the state functioned in a mock state legislature at the Connecticut Capitol and Legislative Office Building. Lauralton was the only private school with its own delegation.

Seventy students participate in Blood Drive

The Student Council Blood Drive held on March 16 was a huge success!  A total of 83 student, staff and parent participants donated 46 pints of blood, a school record! The Red Cross very much appreciates the efforts of the Student Council since one pint of blood can save up to three lives. The Blood Drive was organized and staffed by Student Council officers and senior members. The Student Council thanks those parents and teachers who donated and is especially appreciative of the support of the 70 students who donated.

 



Lauralton celebrates foreign language learning

On March 16, Lauralton’s three world language honor societies held their annual inductions of new members. There were 17 new inductees:  Laura Blagys, '07 and Margaret Steiner, '07 received certificates from the Société Honoraire de Français.  The honorees of the Junior Classical League were Andrea Archer, '06, Kylie Culnane, '07, Heather Hawkes, '09, Kelly Kopchik, '07, Lauren Marmol, '07, Megan Paqua, '07 and Allison Vincenzi, '07. Added to the roles of Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica were the names of Johana Borjas, '08, Julianne Dorset, '08, Catherine Lynch, '08, Caroline Raccuia, '08, Elizabeth Sohmer, '08, Stephanie Urciuoli, '08, Elizabeth Vail, '07 and Michaela Walsh, '07. These students earned membership in their respective societies for their outstanding performances in the second and third years of language study. Their consistent and enthusiastic participation in Lauralton’s three world language clubs was also rewarded by this special recognition.         

Alyssa Reyes awarded Nutmeg Scholarship

Alyssa Reyes, ’06, daughter of Carlos and Migdalia Reyes of Stratford, has been awarded a Nutmeg Scholarship by the University of Connecticut. This scholarship honors the exceptional accomplishments of Connecticut high school seniors. All semifinalists and finalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, the National Hispanic Recognition Program and the National Merit Semifinalist Competition were eligible to apply. Selection for the award is highly competitive and valued at $14,600 annually, the full cost of tuition. Alyssa is one of 32 Connecticut high school students awarded either a Nutmeg Scholarship or Day of Pride Scholarship this year. 

The entire Lauralton Hall community congratulates Alyssa on this outstanding achievement. 



Galiani named scholar athlete by News 12

Congratulations to Margaret Galiani, ’06 who has been named scholar athlete of the week for the week of February 27 by News 12 Connecticut.

 

Margaret is a three-sport athlete (basketball, volleyball and lacrosse) who also excels in the classroom. She has led the basketball team in scoring for the last three seasons and is a two-time All-Conference selection. Basketball coach Steve Schuler credits his captain for the team’s success this season. Margaret carries a 98 average and has been accepted at Georgetown University and Boston College She says she is leaning towards BC and hopes to major in pre-med.
