At the annual Catherine McAuley Liturgy on January 30, Lauralton Hall opened Catholic Schools Week by honoring the memory of the foundress of the Sisters of Mercy and announcing the 2005-2006 Women of Mercy, nominated and voted on by staff, faculty and students. The students who were named Women of Mercy embody the qualities chosen for this year’s national slogan for Catholic Schools Week (a joint project of the National Catholic Educational Association and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for the nation’s 7,800 Catholic schools)--Character, Compassion and Values.
Kaleigh Ferguson,’09; Laura Turner, ’08; Michelle Salzillo, ’07; and Sara Brennan, ’06 were chosen as the students in each class who best emulate the spirit of Catherine McAuley by being rooted in the values of Jesus, committed to education, compassionate and generous of person and talents. We congratulate these young women and their families.

The Freelove Baldwin Stow Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently honored Serena Silva, ’06 with the DAR Good Citizen Award. The chapter chose one honoree from each of Milford’s four high schools to receive this prestigious award for exemplifying the DAR standards of good citizenship—dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Lauralton students Mary Albano, ’06; Nina Demeter, ’07; and Emily Sanchez, ’06 recently participated in the All State Southern Region Choir. The girls competed with other singers from the Southern Region and were selected as some of the top ranking singers in the high schools in our area. Held at Maloney High School in Meriden on January 13 - 14, the festival was sponsored by the Connecticut Music Educators Association. While participating in the festival, Nina Demeter was selected from over 40 other singers as soloist for "Freedom Trilogy," one of the choral pieces.

Celebrating a Century of Women, the theme of this Centennial year, has never been more evident then at the ever-popular “Christmas in the Mansion.” In December this community of young women and their families rose to the occasion to support this important event. Donations for the raffle and gift boutique poured in, decorators worked endlessly to prepare an angelic feel, families and alumnae baked delicacies for sale in the Bake Shoppe, Lauralton Hall merchandise was designed exclusively for our community and trees were beautifully decorated for raffle. Preparations for this major annual fundraiser began in the fall and lasted throughout the event weekend. Parents, students and alumnae worked diligently toward a common goal . . . a successful friend-raiser and fundraiser. Without the dedication of these amazing volunteers this event could not have been a success.

The Alumnae Relations Office, along with the Alumnae Executive Board, hosted members of the Classes of 2002 through 2005 for the annual Recent Alumnae Brunch on January 4, 2006, in the Claven Auditorium. New this year to the event was the inclusion of the Class of 2006 who joined the alums for a special brunch and opportunity to discuss “life after Lauralton.”

Meredith Elia,’08, daughter of Glenn and Teresa Elia of Milford, has been named the Lauralton Hall Hugh O’Brien Leadership (HOBY) Ambassador for 2005-2006. HOBY is the nation’s premier program exclusively designed for high school sophomores. It provides lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower individuals to achieve their highest potential. Annually, over 20,000 public and private high schools are invited to select an outstanding tenth grader to attend a three or four-day HOBY leadership development seminar.

The the Lauralton Hall community once again participated in the Christmas giving program sponsored by Mercy Learning Center in Bridgeport ( http://www.mercylearningcenter.org). The Center collects gift certificates for distribution to the women it serves. Gift certificates are given to the women in time for them to select appropriate items for their children and themselves. Suggested retailers include local grocery stores, pharmacies, discount stores and public transportation and communications providers. This program not only gives the women budgeting experience, but also provides them the opportunity to purchase the gifts their children have requested.

To help expose area elementary students to beautiful music at Christmastime and to provide Lauralton’s Advanced Vocal Ensemble (AVE) additional opportunities to perform for audiences, AVE will present a series of Christmas concerts at local elementary schools and town events.
