On March 21, two officers of the Lauralton Chapter of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) participated in the Judiciary Committee Public Hearing in the Legislative Building in Hartford. While attending the Connecticut Coalition to Stop Underage Drinking Youth Summit earlier in the month, Vice President Colette Toni, ’06 and Secretary Kelly Kerrigan, ’06 were asked to testify at the March 21 hearing. Both testified in favor of House Bill #6901 - An Act Concerning Underage Drinking. This bill would “provide sanctions against adults who knowingly permit minors to possess alcohol on private property and prohibit the possession of alcohol by minors on private property.”
Lauralton students shine at Youth and Government Conference Posted on Mar 19, 2005
Lauralton’s Youth and Government delegation, 82 members strong, was among the largest of the 22 delegations at this year’s Connecticut YMCA Youth and Government Conference held in Hartford on March 18 - 20. Students from high schools throughout the state functioned in a mock state legislature at the Connecticut Capitol and Legislative Office Building. Lauralton was the only private school with its own delegation. Of the 23 bills signed by Governor Liz Brittenham, ’05, five bills were from the Lauralton delegation. In addition, Lauralton students won several major awards: Under the direction of social studies teachers Courtney Dwyer and Mark Allen, club moderators, Lauralton’s Youth and Government Club has grown in the past few years…from 65 students in 1997-98 to 82 students this year. Each year Youth and Government members work hard learning the fundamentals of debate, bill writing, and basic parliamentary procedure in preparation for the spring conference. Congratulations to this year’s Youth and Government Club members for continuing the proud Lauralton tradition of award winning delegations.
Freshmen attend Jostens Leadership Workshop Posted on Mar 18, 2005
On March 15, a group of Lauralton freshmen participated in Jostens Freshman Leadership Workshop at Newington, CT High School. Lauralton faculty members identified more than one quarter of the freshmen as having outstanding potential for leadership, and those students were invited to attend the workshop. Focusing on high school freshmen to help them develop the personal character and interpersonal skills needed to make a difference in their school environment, the workshop is designed to challenge and motivate potential freshman leaders. Presenter Ed Gerety, an experienced keynote speaker and leadership trainer at national youth leadership conferences, colleges and universities and schools across the country, is recognized for his unique ability to connect with audiences about real issues. Through his personal experiences, humor and insights he teaches the principles and skills essential to the development of leaders. His powerful program left a lasting impact on the freshman participants. Marena Wisniewski, ’08 said of the experience, “It was a ‘wow’ kind of thing. The presenter was terrific; he started out like a stand-up comic to get us relaxed and comfortable. I never really thought about it quite this way before…the meaning of being a leader is really pretty simple—you need to be a caring person with a positive attitude, and you have to be able to set and accomplish goals.”
Lauralton celebrates foreign language learning and students’ stellar efforts Posted on Mar 13, 2005
On March 9, Lauralton’s three foreign language honor societies inducted a total of 18 new members during a joint ceremony held in the school auditorium. Alumna Caitlin Sohacki, Class of 2003, opened the program with a delightful and insightful address to the students about the adventures and potential for personal discovery provided by her recent semester abroad in Spain. The evening’s honorees included: for French, Nicole Boggs, Sara Brennan, Melissa Feulner, Kathleen Keenoy, Lauren Murray and Flannery Zimmer; for Latin, Rebecca Battey, Emily Boynton, Margaret Galiani, Theresa Hanley, Colleen Kerrisk, Alyssa Kudlicki and Katie O’Connell; and for Spanish, Tracey Allen, Catherine Caporizzo, Stephanie Dillon, Paula Graham and Victoria Pennick. Immediately following the ceremonies the foreign language clubs hosted the annual International Dinner at which the food was plentiful and delicious. The Spanish Club treated the group to tempting hors d’oeuvre and tasty beverages, the Latin Club members provided very healthy salads, garlic bread, rolls and butter, and le Cercle francais supplied pastries, tarts, cream puffs and other desserts. Parents of the honor society inductees were the special guests and the cafeteria was decorated with student-created posters, signs and Latin sayings, all of which provided a great atmosphere for the feast. Seniors celebrate "100 days to graduation" milestone Posted on Mar 12, 2005
On March 2, the senior class gathered for their 100 Days Dinner. After opening remarks by President Barbara Griffin, Senior Class President Saron Smith-Hardin spoke about the significance of the event. Campus Minister Christine Ring offered grace and a delicious buffet was enjoyed by all. As the seniors finished dinner, letters they had written to each other and to themselves in freshman year were distributed, triggering both emotional and humorous reactions. After the traditional cutting of the cake by the class officers, master hypnotist Dan LaRosa performed his routine to the amazement of the guests. Having passed the “100 days until graduation” milestone, Lauralton’s seniors are beginning to contemplate their bitter/sweet feelings about graduation and all the surrounding activities SADD representatives attend Hartford Youth Summit Posted on Mar 11, 2005
