On March 19, 34 world language students were inducted into the French, Latin and Spanish honor societies. Seniors Molly Yardley, Elizabeth Lynch and Maureen Cashman eloquently led the ceremonies for their respective languages. Molly Yardley holds dual membership in both the Latin and French Honor Societies and Elizabeth Lynch is a member of both the French and Spanish Honor Societies. Julie Kinsella, ’98, Lauralton’s External Relations Coordinator, spoke passionately about her French studies while at Lauralton and during her undergraduate and graduate years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in French and Music and a Masters degree in French. Ms. Kinsella, who studied abroad at Université de Paris IV-Sorbonne, encouraged honor society members to take advantage of such programs in college. By Jessica Makrinos, ’09 MILFORD, CT - On March 25, 2009 the Lauralton Hall SADD chapter will launch a sticker shock project targeting adults in the area. The stickers are designed to be placed on multi-packs of alcoholic beverages and on paper bags used in liquor stores. In addition to the stickers, stores are given the option of placing a sign, identical to the sticker but larger, in the window or at the check out counter. Lauralton students successful at YAG…again! More than one hundred Lauralton Hall ladies recently participated in the Connecticut State Youth & Government Conference sponsored by the Hartford YMCA. This was a mock legislature in which students took on the roles of our state lawmakers as well as some state official positions, including governor and attorney general. Schools from all over Connecticut participated giving Lauralton students the chance to meet and debate with students from all walks of life. The Fine Arts Department proudly presents for the first time an exhibit of faculty and staff artwork from Wednesday, March 25 until Tuesday, March 31, in Claven Auditorium. The opening reception will take place on Wednesday, March 25 from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. The exhibit will be open to the public on weekdays during school hours. There is no admission fee.

Kiley Cappetta of West Haven has been awarded the Mother Mary Augustine Claven Scholarship, named for the foundress of Lauralton Hall, a four-year academic full scholarship. More than 400 people helped celebrate Irish Night at Lauralton Hall on February 28. The sounds of thundering bagpipes and drums filled the gym as the Fairfield Gaelic Pipe Band marched in to signify the start of this spectacular event. Guests rose to their feet to applaud the award-winning band, the beginning of an evening filled with many ovations. Drawing from the diverse New York Metro music scene, the Highland Rovers Band thrilled the crowd with traditional Irish favorites as well as the contemporary sound for which they have become known. The record crowd of parents, alum parents, alumnae, faculty, staff and friends was wowed by the John O’Keefe Champion Irish Step Dancers as they performed, in full costume, their traditional reels and jigs. The dancers completed their set with an a capella hard shoe jig that had the crowd tapping along! Toward the end of the evening, the Fairfield Gaelic Pipe Band returned for another set beginning with an incredible drum solo followed by the entire pipe band joining in for the encore. Guests danced well into the wee hours and were very excited about the return of Irish Night. |
